ABA Fact vs. Fiction

Many Myths exist about ABA. Help yourself separate Fact vs. Fiction.

Fiction: ABA uses punishment or aversive procedures such as spanking and yelling '"No" to motivate and teach new skills.

Fact: ABA instead uses positive reinforcement such as praise, candy and toys, to motivate and teach new skills.

Fiction: The reports of children recovering are based on case study’s or antidotal reports.

Fact: The research is replicable and proven to produce recovery. Systematic yet flexible and adaptable to all situations in the students life.

Fiction: The approach locks the child into responding to a specific set instructions for the rest of his/her life.The children's ability to perform is confined to a “Therapy Room”

Fact: Children who place in the best outcome group are are able to generalize their skills in all environments and able to ask and answers novel information. (The same may not be true of children who do not place in the best outcome group.)

Fiction: ABA is a dis-empowering approach that requires the family to rely on other professionals for the rest of the child's life.

Fact: ABA is an empowering approach for families which uses structured problem solving to arrive an a probable solution for almost all behaviors.

Fiction: ABA teaches the child programmed answers and to talk like a “robot”.

Fact: ABA is able to teach natural sounding speech and the children come up with their own answers in time. (The same may not be true of children who do not place in the best outcome group.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of program does Autism & Aspergers Consulting provide?
A: Autism & Aspergers Consulting, LLC provides an integrated and individualized program based on the same ABA program and curriculum used in the 1987, 1993 Lovaas study and the 1997 Wisconsin Young Autism Project replication study which achieved a rate of 47% of the children placing into the best outcome group. Autism & Aspergers Consulting, LLC also provides components of DIR/Floor-time approach, the Verbal Analysis approach, and elements of Pivotal Response Training.

Q: Are aversive techniques ever used?
A: No, Aversive or punishment techniques are never used and are discouraged in parenting as well.

Q: Should my child go to school?
A: This is a difficult question that can only be answered once your consultant has evaluated and your child has begun a program. In general, most children perform better and make faster gains if the child is withheld from school until it is determined by your consultant that it is clinically appropriate to be placed in school and that the child is able to benefit from social learning.

Q: Who should attend the workshop?
A: Anyone who you feel could benefit from learning about the principles of behavior modification. Instructors are required to attend and family members are encouraged to attend. Teachers and other special service providers, such as speech and occupational therapists, are welcome to attend as well, given they understand that the workshop is given to provide treatment for your child in an in-home setting.

Q: Another person I know is interested in getting their child involved in behavior modification. Can they attend the workshop?
A: Yes. As long as they understands that the program provided is geared towards your child and the consultant will not be able to answer any programming questions regarding their child. You may be able to reduce your cost of your workshop by referring new clients in our referral program. *Available in limited area's.

Q: What will you teach?
A: An evaluation will determine exactly what we will teach, however every identifiable deficit skill will be targeted systematically during the course of treatment.

Q: Who pays for the treatment?
A: That depends on the state and county you live in.In most instances the payment is the guardians responsibility. In some states we have third party payor agreements with different agencies. In some cases school districts and even the Federal government have paid directly for services. We encourage you to seek out various funding sources and will work with you to try to meet your funding needs.

Q: Will you bill my insurance?
A:Autism & Aspergers Consulting, LLC does not file health care claims on your behalf, however in some instances, your insurance may cover payments for our services. In these cases you are responsible for paying your bill and your insurance company reimburses you for your expense.
